Chasing viral ‘Korean Glass Skin’ trend? Experts warn it could be dangerous
Experts warn that the viral ‘Korean glass skin’ beauty trend promoted on social media may pose serious health risks.
Thrissur: “Do you want your skin to glow like mine? And that too within just seven days… Then click the link below.” The enticing promise appears on mobile screens, promoted by popular social media influencers. Many users are unaware that the growing obsession with the ‘Korean glass skin’ trend among youngsters is being widely exploited.
Excessive use can be harmful
Dermatologists warn that using such products without the advice of a qualified doctor can lead to health problems. Many of these skincare products contain chemical substances that may pose risks when used indiscriminately.
What is Korean glass skin?
‘Glass skin’ is a beauty concept that originated from Korean beauty trends. The idea is to achieve facial skin that looks as smooth and clear as glass—spotless, radiant and glowing.
To achieve this look, people often use moisturisers, serums, facial oils, vitamin tablets and dietary supplements. Videos promoting the trend circulate widely on social media under hashtags such as skin glow, glass skin and Korean skin.
Mercury risk
Studies have found that some skincare products sold through social media contain toxic substances such as mercury. Mercury can temporarily reduce the production of melanin in the skin, creating the illusion of a lighter complexion.
However, this can lead to serious health problems and may affect the nervous system and kidneys.
“Products that claim to deliver ‘Korean glass skin’ may cause redness, allergies, itching, dryness and blemishes on facial skin. Uncontrolled use of products containing steroids can even lead to severe skin damage,” said Reshmi Aravind, Pharmacovigilance Officer.
